Porcelain Veneers

If you have a perfect smile, then certainly fortune has smiled upon you. Most people however, have issues that they would like to have improved, and as time marches on, those issues can become more significant. Teeth can become chipped or stained, and even misaligned. Fortunately, most of these issues are easily corrected.

Dental crowns are one solution, and in fact they can work not just to fix imperfections, but to improve the functionality of your teeth. The problem with crowns, though, is that they can be quite expensive. Porcelain veneers, on the other hand, are less costly because they cover only the front of your teeth, not the entire tooth as is the case with crowns. Porcelain veneers can alter the size, length, shape and color of your teeth.

The Procedure

If you have been contemplating porcelain veneers, the first thing you should do is visit Dr. Michael Maniscalco at Maniscalco Cosmetic & General Dentistry in Birmingham, AL. He can answer any questions that you may have concerning porcelain veneers, and if you decide that you would like to have the work done, you can begin on the first visit.

To get your teeth prepared for the veneers (assuming that you are having traditional porcelain veneers installed), Dr. Maniscalco will scrape a bit of enamel off of your teeth, so that the veneers will be properly anchored and feel natural. Then, he will create impressions of your upper teeth, which he will then send to a lab where your veneers will be made. Once they come back from the lab, he will check to make sure they are the right color, and then install them using a special adhesive and a light to cure it. Finally, he will check your bite and do any necessary adjustments.

Because the procedure is done using a local anesthetic, you will not feel pain. However, you may find that for a while after having the veneers installed, your teeth feel somewhat sensitive. This is usually easily treated by means of over-the-counter toothpastes that are made especially for sensitive teeth.

Types of Porcelain Veneersporcelain veneers

In addition to standard porcelain veneers, we also offer Lumineers® and Durathins®. These are thinner veneers, and highly suitable when used to correct minor imperfections. There are advantages to these thin veneers. First of all, they can usually be installed with little or no preparation – you may not even need a local anesthetic. Additionally, if it should ever be necessary, these veneers can be removed. With traditional veneers, removal is difficult at best, and often simply impossible.

The Benefits

Porcelain veneers look just like natural teeth, and they will never decay. Keep in mind, though, that if you neglect your health, your gums and the underlying teeth could become damaged. This could cause your veneers to fail.

Veneers are easy to take care of – just brush and floss as you normally would, and see Dr. Maniscalco regularly for checkups. Properly cared for, you can count on your veneers to last for a very long time.
