One reason so many patients visit Maniscalco Cosmetic & General Dentistry in Birmingham is that we offer such a wide variety of dental treatments outside of the norm. We call these treatments that don’t fit in any particular category “specialized treatments.” These are treatments we specialize in that other dental offices might not offer. If you have an emergency or suffer from TMJ pain, our dentist can help you find a solution to treat your problems. Learn more about the different dental treatments we offer in Birmingham.
If you break or chip a tooth, or a filling falls out at odd hours or even during the middle of the day, you should know that Dr. Maniscalco is here to help treat your dental emergency as soon as possible. As soon as an emergency arises, give our dentist a call and we will find a way for you to be seen as soon as possible.
Grinding your teeth or clenching them together while you sleep can cause a multitude of dental problems. This can not only be an annoying sound to listen to during the night if your partner does it, but it can be quite harmful to your teeth. When you grind or clench your teeth, over time this can destroy the enamel, wear down your teeth, cause jaw pain, neck pain, or even headaches when you wake up. You can choose the route of buying a night guard from the store, but it won’t fit your teeth properly.
At our dentist office, we create custom fitting night guards for our patients. These ensure a proper fit that will be most effective at preventing damage, headaches and other pain. We will choose the best night guard for your mouth. We favor the NTI night guard which is smaller than traditional night guards and therefore more comfortable to wear at night.
TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint and occasionally, this joint can become inflamed and cause you pain which leads to temporomandibular joint disorder or TMD. TMJ and TMD are used interchangeably with dentists so if you hear your dentist say you have TMJ, they most likely mean TMD. What you do need to know is that if you are experiencing pain in your jaw, sensitive teeth, or difficulty moving your jaw, you might have this disorder.
With TMD, you may need physical therapy or surgery in extreme cases. Fortunately, simple treatments can fix the problems most of the time. Treatment might include wearing a night guard at night, or an NTI night guard. It can also include using BOTOX as a solution. BOTOX injections are done in the jaw to relax the muscles and stop the nerve impulses that cause pain. During a consultation with Dr. Maniscalco, we will find the cause of your TMD so that we can administer a solution so you don’t have to live your life in pain. Bring back your quality of life with TMD treatment in Birmingham.
If you have heard you snore or stop breathing at night, or wake up feeling exhausted, you might have sleep apnea. If you suspect you have it, we recommend that you visit your physician to be diagnosed. A diagnosis will include either a sleep analysis at an institute or a take-home test that monitors your sleep. Your physician will look at the results to determine if you have sleep apnea. If you are diagnosed, you can come to visit Dr. Maniscalco to learn about our different treatment options. We offer an oral appliance known as SOMNOMED® therapy. This device opens up your airway so that you breathe correctly throughout the night. It will prevent you from snoring and from waking up throughout the night. Find out if SOMNOMED is the right sleep apnea treatment for you.
